His final year, graduation looming, he noticed many of his classmates snickering when they thought he wasn't looking. As he soon found out, a Rufflet had taken a liking to him, following him around like a baby duckling after its mother, no matter how much he told it to go away. Eventually he gave up and let it join his team, and the now-Braviary has since proven his worth.

CHANDELURE NAME: Chandelure SPECIES: Chandelure GENDER: Male EGG GROUP: Amorphous MOVES: Flame Burst Hex Clear Smog Night Shade Will-o-wisp Confuse Ray Fire Spin Imprison THE POKEMON: Shields likes Fire Pokemon. If he thought it feasible, his entire team would be nothing but Fire Types, save for one electric mouse, but he knows he needs a variety in order to do the work he needs to do. It doesn't stop him from having two though, and Chandelure is easily his favorite. Chandelure was caught as a Litwick back in his academy days, the little candle always outside at night. One day he decided that it was to be his, battled it with his then-Pikachu, and caught it. Chandelure tends to float about his office at night, providing light.

RAICHU NAME: Raichu SPECIES: Raichu GENDER: Male EGG GROUP: Field and Fairy MOVES: Thunderpunch Charge Thunder Thunderbolt Agility Slam Quick Attack Electro Ball THE POKEMON: Shields will never admit it, but Raichu was his first Pokemon and current favorite, back when he was just a boy and Raichu was just a Pikachu. They met by accident and were fast friends, Raichu sticking with Shields through Ranger Academy and through the ranks of the rangers themselves. Raichu tends to use his tail as a blade, something they picked up from Lt Surge's file. He is Shields's first choice for a battle unless he knows he has the disadvantage.

SHIFTRY NAME: Shiftry SPECIES: Shiftry GENDER: Male EGG GROUP: Field and Grass MOVES: Leaf Storm Synthesis Foul Play Faint Attack Razor Wind Nature Power Growth Beat Up THE POKEMON: Shiftry was his first Pokemon caught outside the academy, when he was assigned to forest duty outside of Fortree City. Though it was but a Seedot at the time, he watched it defend a wounded brother from a pair of Swablu and was so impressed by its spirit that he befriended it and added it to his team. Though he never expected to have a grass type on his team, he tries his best to keep him well away from the fire Shields likes so much. Shiftry and Chandelure have a very odd friendship.

INFERNAPE NAME: Infernape SPECIES: Infernape GENDER: Male EGG GROUP: Field and Human-Like MOVES: Close Combat Punishment Flare Wheel Mach Punch Blaze Kick Double Kick Fire Punch Focus Energy THE POKEMON: Infernape was a thank you gift from a dojo that he helped rid of some gangsters early after his promotion from forest duty. They'd been told the little Chimchar was a fighting Pokemon when they had received it, but they were having trouble getting it to participate like the other Pokemon, and so would he please take it off their hands? He did, unable to refuse a fire Pokemon, especially one that was as agile a fighter as the Chimchar turned out to be. It didn't pick up any fighting skills until it evolved, but from there it has only improved and is one of Shields's main battlers.

CARRACOSTA NAME: Carracosta SPECIES: Carracosta GENDER: Male EGG GROUP: egg group MOVES: Aqua Tail Smack Down Brine Crunch Ancient Power Protect Water Pulse Rock Throw THE POKEMON: Carracosta was a capture that was half accident, half necessity. Shields needed a water Pokemon. Surfing was necessary to get from place to place, especially when he was ever assigned to an area near any sort of water. Shields planned to catch a Gyarados one day, figuring the terrifying might of the water dragon would be enough to scare away half of the criminals, and so he took a lesson in fishing in Unova. Hours passed and he hadn't caught anything, when a Pokeball came rolling over towards him. It was one of his, marked with his signature flame sign, but it seemed the little turtle had wandered into it by accident while he was out. Taking fate for fate, he kept the Pokemon in his team, and it was only later that he found out that the Pokemon was supposed to have been extinct or close to it.
