She was (is) mean and had (has) a biting problem. Clay paid a lot of money for Dyna and as such didn't want to see her released, so he claimed her for himself. She proved to be a halfway-decent companion for Clay and levelled up quickly under his ownership. An utterly ruthless battler, she uses her carefully-taught moves with impressive grace and tact. That biting problem never fully went away, though; it became more of a chewing problem. Countless coffee tables and chair-legs later, Dyna has six gold teeth and a stomach full of splinters. She rather enjoys being bipedal as it has opened up a whole new world of things to gnaw on.

MERLE NAME: Merle SPECIES: Palpitoad GENDER: Male EGG GROUP: Water 1 Group MOVES: Aqua Ring Bubblebeam Muddy Water Bulldoze THE POKEMON: Merle was caught during a fishing trip in 1986, when hair was big, popular music was synth-heavy, and Clay looked pretty much the same but for a moustache and a loudly-colored bandana around his neck. Merle was a puny, anemic tympole intent on giving his life for the fragrant, half-rotten chunk of polish sausage at the end of the fishing line. Clay considered tossing him back, but the dime-sized soft spot in his black, atrophied husk of a heart compelled him to do otherwise. Nowadays, Merle fancies himself a musician. When not destroying things down in the mine, he enjoys making wet flapping sounds in time with the constant tinny soundtrack of dated country music that filters in from the lobby. It's very annoying.

GRETCHEN NAME: Gretchen SPECIES: Excadrill GENDER: Female EGG GROUP: Field Group MOVES: Hone Claws Slash Rock Slide Bulldoze THE POKEMON: Clay's very first pokemon, his pride-and-joy. Gretchen is the pokemon who Clay supposedly resembles most: she's squat and powerful, drawing strength from nothing but the dirt beneath her paws. Also, she's angry about something a good 86% of the time (the other 14% is spent asleep). Gretchen is known for being a terror, stomping heavily around the mine and snarling at slacking miners until they get back to work. She has been known to grab Damon by the collar of his shirt and drag him around on the gravel driveway for no reason other than she just plain dislikes him. Clay describes her as "the daughter I never had."
