"Ready, old girl?"
The look the Chansey delivered her trainer as she reached up to lightly readjust the eyepatch against his skin, her little hands smoothing over the ruined skin for a moment before dancing back from him. "Love you too, Mum." Avery laughed happily, going back to rolling bandages up for storage in his pack. Unlike other trips where he would be soothing agitated dragons or moving them off, this one had higher stakes. This time he had two rookies hoping to come along with him -- if they ever showed. Avery's one good eye flickered briefly to the ground to check the shadows length before turning back to his task. Over the years he'd been studying the large creatures up close, Avery had gained more and more things that would help him. Herbs, things to blind them with, bandages, lots of bandages, and good old Lifesaver. Even though the Chansey was his only partner from before now, Avery knew very well that his life would have been forfeit without her.
Reaching out again, his hand briefly came into contact with her again as she tucked the bandages he'd already rolled away into the pack. If only she could talk, Avery had a feeling she would have been lecturing him until she had no breath left -- just like a mother. Finally he gathered up the one thing that had saved his life on so many occassions he'd stopped counting - his whip. A weapon or a tool, Avery preferred it over any gun or other weaponry simply because of it's ability to scare before wounding. The sharp crack of leather against the ground could startle a dragon as surely as a gunshot, but it could leave a lot less damage. Finally hoisting the pack up onto his back, Avery's gaze went over the currently peaceful realm of his hometown. His obsession with dragons had started there, and he supposed it was as good a place as any to start the basics of Dragon chasing with a couple of newbies.
Bright and happy as Avery was, there was still a researcher under there somewhere. The mind that loved to learn something new about his particular love, and that mind was currently worried. If Keavy or Rath were just that split second too late... His gloved hand rested briefly against the eye-patch covering his most disfiguring scar before dropping away as he sighed. He'd just have to watch them really closely that was all... He'd have to be faster than he would be on his own. Keavy and Rath didn't have the built-up reflexes that he'd been training, and that alone could be deadly. Still, the idea of working with another person... Exciting. Definitely exciting.
Unwillingly, a grin broke through the more serious expression on Avery's face, and he grinned at the Chansey now fussing with his shirt, trying to smooth the wrinkles out where she could see them. "Think they'll ever get here, old girl? I'm starting to get bored!"

Of course the one day that he had something planned for him, something came up at work. It had been easy enough to take care of, but he could help but wonder why they couldn't let Ryan take it. They had the same position, after all, and the mission hadn't even been that difficult. It was hardly worth his time. But orders were orders, and he had to obey them, even if it did make him late for his meet up with two of his few friends.
Admittedly, he wasn't as excited about the trip as he had been when they'd first planned it. Then, he had had an interest and a chance in Keavy, but now...now she was with Avery, the other person they were dragon hunting with. For the sake of the trip, he could throw on his usual smile, pretend to not be bothered, but part of him wanted to pull back every time he saw them together. It had been foolish of him to think that he might be able to have more. He was barely able to pull out the emotional attachment needed for friendship, let alone a lover.
Maybe she'd seen that. Or maybe he'd simply scared her off by showing his weakness in front of her after Sirius's capture, by telling her just what he was. She hadnt' taken it well and he wasn't sure if he was relieved that she was back to talking to him or not. Was it better to have no contact than to wonder just how much doubt shadowed her mind every time she looked at him?
He sighed again. Those really weren't thoughts suitable prior to a dangerous hunting mission, they'd only distract. While Rath didn't care what happened to him (in fact, if he died today, all the better), he had promised to protect Keavy. Even if she chose Avery over him, that wasn't going to change. They were friends, she was special, she was always going to be that way, and so she had to be safe, no matter his emotional discomfort. His purple eyes caught sight of red hair then, and Emperor turned, swooping towards the ground at dangerous speeds, slowing to a halt a bit aways from the dragon tamer. Rath dismounted and recalled his oldest friend, walking over to Avery just in time to hear his last words.
"Bored already, Avery? And the adventure hasn't even started," the rebel hitman said with a smile, tucking Emperor's Pokeball back onto his belt. He glanced about, noticing a distinct lack of their pretty female friend. "Keavy's not here yet?" |
