Both of his parents said no. So, in the dark of the night, he snuck out with the intent of running away, hoping to make a new life for himself. Being a useless thirteen year old, he got caught. His mother wanted to punish him but his father admired his son's determination. The next day, he went out and picked out a Pikachu for his son to start working with, in hopes that they would get on his good side and he would just stay home with them instead of venturing out into the world of pokemon. But, of course, Russell became too edgy and felt closed in and so he took off in hopes of becoming a legendary breeder. Along the way, he decided that a Raichu would make him look much more legit as a breeder and he worked in a small sewing shop until he had enough money to buy a Thunder Stone. It was there that he discovered his love and talent for sewing and added that to his list of ambitions. Itsy Bitsy is Russell's life partner, for real. He would do anything for that adorable Raichu and she would do anything for him.

Itsy Bitsy was all for it and Russell was starting to see the appeal of settling down. Unfortunately, he was also only fifteen at the time which meant that not many people were going to let him stay in a house all by himself, let alone try to run a breeding business. He had to learn the tricks of the trade. He settled down as an apprentice of a famous breeder out in Mossdeep, a quiet man who kept to himself mostly. Russell learned everything he coule in the following year that he stayed with the breeder and his pokemon, a hefty Raticate called Big Daddy. Soon, the Rebels made their rise to power and somehow Russell's master got involved and his breeding shop got burned down and all the pokemon were stolen. The old man urged for Russell to take Big Daddy and never look back. Russell did as he was told and has been terrified of the Rebel Force ever since. Big Daddy is a very proud Raticate, and always is too independent to want to rely on Russell for anything.

So he began the painful search for pokemon who he could begin breeding together in hopes of becoming some sort of powerful pokemon that trainers all over would want to have. So, naturally, he started searching in rock caverns and caves where powerful rock pokemon inhabited. One date, while out searching with Big Daddy, he came across a pair of rock pokemon that just seemed to scare off all the others in the area, keeping their own little area to theirself. It didn't take Russell long to realize that they were mates and were just being protective of their territory. Naturally, being a breeder, Russell was fascinated. Two pokemon of different species had decided together to mate with each other! He sought out to capture the Rhyhorn and the Lairon, a battle which took over two hours with his Raticate and Raichu. Eventually, he made them both his, a powerful Rhyhorn who couldn't stop once he began running and an elegant Lairon who knew how to find rock and steel in even the most desolate places.

When he saw stray pokemon on the street, he went over to help them or examine to see if they had certain traits that he could breed into being a pokemon that people would desire to have at their sides, for whatever reason. At seventeen, he decided to go back to check in on his parents to see what they were up to. Didn't bother calling, he didn't think he needed to. When he got there, he found his mother, drunk and irate and a father who didn't know what to do with her anymore. He ran from home, up into the hills of the Safari Zone, never looking back. He happened upon the Safari Zone, somewhere he'd never really been interested in before becoming a breeder. Now it was haven, somewhere he could pay money to go look for pokemon that had the right qualities to be bred. After about twenty minutes of searching, he happened across a Girafarig who seemed content enough with her daily life of walking around in the Safari Zone. After close inspection, which she seemed to not be phased by, Russell decided to capture her. It was a quick, painless battle and he captured the sweet Molly Wolly, who seems to be affectionate and clingy, but in an adorable way.

He set it up, nice and pretty like, with his bedroom and various places around the house for his pokemon to sleep, so they didn't have to be cramped up in pokeballs all day. Each of his pokemon were ready for the mating season, all except his lonely little Molly Wolly who seemed miserable that she couldn't help start up the breeding business. With this in mind, Russell set out looking for a mate for his Girafarig. It took him weeks to come across a powerful young Sawsbuck, a strong male who wanted a battle. After russling and tussling with an angry Bun Bun, the Sawsbuck was humbled and taken home as a gift to Russell's Girafarig. She was ecstatic....except for the fact that he didn't want her. He seemed too proud to be the pokemon of a breeder. Too confident to want to stay in such a small house. Too cocky to think he couldn't lose a battle. Russell kept him grudgingly, only because Molly Wolly was still infatuated, no matter how much of a jerk he was to her. Russell struggles with this Sawsbuck every day, trying to teach him humility.
