Fire led to rules and rules led him to chess, so the little fox was the one that gave him his purpose in life. Tarrasch got her name upon his start in chess, named after the Tarrasch defense, an opening move, as Tarrasch is his usual opening Pokemon. The Ninetales is his constant companion, the one out of its Pokeball if any of his are, unless going by one of Alex's many plans.

TABIYA NAME: tabiya SPECIES: kirlia GENDER: female EGG GROUP: amorphous MOVES: magical leaf heal pulse teleport double team lucky chant grudge confusion confuse ray THE POKEMON: Tabiya joined Alex's team as a Ralts, stolen from a young girl right after the boy joined the rebels. He kept her as a trophy of his first theft, something about the thrill making him want to keep a memento. Since then, Tabiya has become a core member of his team, though she tends to be more on the support end than full attack like his other Pokemon. She's quite and sweet, just as she looks.

CAISSA NAME: caissa SPECIES: espeon GENDER: female EGG GROUP: field MOVES: psybeam future sight natural gift charm swift sand attack last resort confusion THE POKEMON: Caissa, Alex's Espeon, was named for the goddess of chess, and he found the Espeon's ability to predict invaluable when it came to his plotting, his real life chess games. She helps with the plotting, with the scheming, as best she can, and is a sort of good luck charm for Alex during his actual games of chess. He hasn't lost since she was on his team, and not through illegal means either. Easily his second favorite Pokemon, behind his Tarrasch.

ALEKHINE NAME: alekhine SPECIES: lucario GENDER: male EGG GROUP: field and human like MOVES: calm mind foresight force palm detect metal claw dark pulse sky uppercut swords dance THE POKEMON: If Tarrasch is his opening move and Tabiya his midgame, Alekhine is his end game, his final sequence of moves that ensure his victory. His only male Pokemon, Alekhine is sharp, fast, and dedicated, and his ability to read aura helps Alex's plans substantially. Alekhine was caught by accident, the Pokeball hitting him as a Riolu, asleep, instead of the Pokemon that Alex had been aiming for. Alex has forgotten what that other Pokemon was, so pleased with Alekhine's capture and performance since.
