Selphy's mother, for example, raised a Ludicolo, while her father raised a Lanturn. Around the age of twelve, a child is officially welcomed as a "member of the family." The family head gives them a Pokemon that either is, or will evolve into, a dual water type. Selphy was given a Piplup by the family head, who believed that because of the similar dispositions, they would get along well. The whole, "Pokemon reflect their trainers" type of thing. Unfortunately, pairing the two together initially didn't work too well. Being so like minded, they argued to no end and honestly just didn't manage to accomplish much. Because of their lack of ability to get along, Selphy was at one point "exiled" from the Bernkastel household. Meaning, she had to go off and do her own stuff elsewhere, until she and her recently obtained Pokemon decided that they wanted to get along. So, the two ventured off to Pacifidlog where they remained for about a year. During that time, they were able to resolve their differences for the most part. When Piplup evolved in Prinplup, Selphy decided to nickname her partner. The two returned to Sootopolis. When Selphy was seventeen, Atlanta evolved into an Empoleon. Atlanta, like his trainer, is a rather strict and hard to please Pokemon. He is, all in all, a responsible, capable Pokemon though his pride often gets in the wa of accomplishing many simple tasks.
