THE POKEMON:
Masami met Zora at a very young age, after he'd been the subject of a particularly brutal session of bullying. In tears, he had run north from Lavender Town to the Rock Tunnel, and felt his way around within it until he got lost. In the depths of that darkness, he found not only solace from the prying eyes of the world, but also the very first of his pokemon. As he sat in one place, happy to be away from others and yet terrified at the thought that he would never get out, he felt something brush against his leg. His curiosity overwhelming him, he put his arms out and tried his best to follow the soft pitter-patter of its steps, until finally they arrived at the exit, just north of his town. He only got a quick look at her before she disappeared once more into the darkness, and to him she appeared to be a younger girl. However, upon seeing her tail, Masami was able to fully understand what she was, and made it his mission to capture her. He'd gotten it into his mind that she was out of her usual environment because she, too, had chosen to hide herself from daylight. Returning to the Rock Tunnel regularly (all the while never once vandalizing the sacred darkness of the tunnel with any sort of light), Masami familiarized himself with its layout. Finally, after nearly a year of searching and making the Rock Tunnel his virtual home away from home, Masami realized that much of the time he was becoming the prey, rather than the predator. He would spot her at times, watching him and following at a safe distance. He never once tried to catch her with a pokeball, both because he would have no chance of a successful capture and because he didn't feel as if it were right. Instead, he chose to continue coming to the tunnel, inviting her to join him as he set up camp deep within its recesses. He would sit for hours on end and speak to her, sometimes unsure of whether she was listening or not. Masami told her of the others in his town, of how they treated him, and all that he thought of himself and humanity because of it. He held something of an innate trust for this pokemon, as she was akin to him: completely out of her environment. Over time, the two grew closer, until finally it was not uncommon for Zora to come over to him and rest her head on his lap as he spoke. She shared everything with him; his tears, his anger, the blood he shed after being assaulted; everything.
One day, as he spoke, a wild pokemon (the species of which he remains unsure) attacked him and knocked him out cold. Zora immediately retaliated the drove off this pokemon, all the while guarding Masami's frame until he awoke. From that day forward, Masami knew Zora had proven her loyalty to him without question; saving his life twice in total. He asked her to join him as his partner, and the fact that she has been by his side since that day should make her answer fairly obvious. Since that day they have been training together, making the Rock Tunnel their home. Masami understands that Zora doesn't want to leave the tunnel, and as such he ventures into town without her when they need supplies, trusting that she can take care of herself. Their relationship is built on trust and a mutual understanding between them, and together they have grown exponentially more powerful over time. |
